100 Faces in 100 Stories — No50

--

The shadows always collected around me at night as if they sought to embrace me. Outside my bedroom window, a tree’s branches stood out in relief as if they were crooked fingers trying to catch at the strands of souls.

It was always like this when I waited for him between the spark and the burn.

“Why don’t you try to find someone else?” my sister, a fellow witch, asked me. “There’s no future with someone like that.”

But I just smiled. “Where would be the fun in someone ordinary?”

She shook her head. “You’re mad.”

“Better mad than bored.”
