After her mother died, Nasrin was left to the unforgiving sands of the desert. The nomad tribe had left them behind to the elements when her mother had shown the first signs of sickness.

A new sandstorm kicked up, and nothing could keep Nasrin from inhaling the sand and choking on it. Soon enough, she fell to her knees with a prayer on her lips.

The old gods didn’t hear her. But something else did.

A creature of smokeless fire appeared like a mirage on the horizon, beckoning her.

Anyone else would have turned away.

But Nasrin? She was desperate.
