Tatiana had always been a wild child. That much hadn’t changed even though she was nearly thirty with a string of dead-end jobs that made her little money and gained her even less clout in a world that cared only about making ends meet. While she languished in her own little universe, I worked my ass off to get through business school.

When I graduated, of course I was pissed that she was a no-show.

To say I was tired of her shenanigans was an understatement. What trick of fate kept her from striving for her dreams the same as any of the rest of us? That was what I wanted to know.

Our parents — my father Micah and my stepmother Alisha — offered me a toast with tight smiles at the graduation party. Micah went on about my accolades and my nice golf swing while Alisha complimented me on my gentleman’s demeanor in spite of the women who had come my way through my years in school.

Then they pulled me to the side afterwards for soft murmurs and kid gloves.

“So sorry,” Alisha mouthed, likely sensing the mood of the hour that I was angry with Tatiana. “You know how she is. She’s never going to change, Perry.”
