My Son’s Fiancée

Calliope Evans brought my son back from the dead.

You can think of that as a figure of speech if you like. But, living in the days of an impending apocalypse, I think you can assume that the truth is much murkier.

It’s not every day a father sees his son turned into a zombie right before his very eyes.

And Calliope? She had been nothing more than the runt of our survivalist group up until that moment.

That day, I saw magic bloom right before my very eyes.

The glaze in my son’s eyes began to recede. His skin, which had become a mottled gray, began to return to more of a flesh tone. His breathing slowed to a steady, normal pace rather than the harsh rasp that had rattled his lungs during the transformation.

I stared at Calliope as she leaned back, a sigh on her lips, before she began to undo the straps that had held my son down during the process.

Calliope looked at me, her eyes dark, before she said, “You can’t tell anyone.”

“How do you expect me to keep quiet? You think someone’s really going to buy that Jake just turned back to normal out of the blue?” Then something dawned on me. “If you can do this, then why aren’t you out there turning everyone…
