My Love Wasn’t Yours to Take
A Poem
I loved you so —
Didn’t you know?
Why did I keep quiet
When the world
Could have been ours?
You could have offered
All the fruits of the land
And I would have declined,
Instead taking your hand
And saying it was mine.
The spark of new love —
Oh, isn’t that what you wanted?
Couldn’t I have sufficed?
But you never looked my way,
No matter what I said or did.
I loved you so —
But you were away,
Far off in the distance,
Never to be reached
By my confession of love.
You could have cried,
And I would have listened
To every complaint,
Every petty word,
Just to show you I cared.
The jolt of heartbreak —
Oh, you shattered, didn’t you?
Could I have pieced you back together?
Who can say?
You never came my way.
