My Heart Is a Patent Pending

A Poem

all those guys in the room
skate their gazes over me —
and I can’t blame them
for their neglect
when I’m trying
so hard (so hard)
to be invisible.

flirtation is a wayward game
which I always lose,
no matter the field of play
because I’m just a face
lost in the crowd
always (always)
in each scene.

but I won’t tell you that
even if your eyes flicker
towards me, just me,
because I may be meek
but I’m not stupid
despite the rumors (rumors)
following me around.

the truth may come out
that my heart is just
a patent pending,
ready to race fast
when the right one
comes along (comes along) —
but it doesn’t matter, does it?
