“Do you want anything?” Micah asked as he sat at the kitchen table, going through old take-out menus her last roommate had collected. “I could go for something sweet, but the nearest bakery is donwtown. Too bad they don’t deliver past midnight.”

“Now you’re just talking nonsense,” Sonya said, bringing a kiss to his temple while he hummed out a melody he had stuck in his head. She ran her fingertips along his scalp, the scratch of her nails making him feel like he needed to go into the bedroom just to let loose some of the tension. How many times had he needed to walk out of the room just to get out of her orbit for a little while and feel like himself again?

But goddamn he loved it.

Micah scattered the menus across the table and thought idily that he would like to splay Sonya across the table one night. But he could never say that. He was the gentleman, not a beast or a mad thing like one of those creatures from an old silent horror film.

“What are you thinking?” Sonya asked, her tone soft, as she still ran her fingertips along his shorn dark hair. His eyes nearly rolled into the back of his head as he counted backward from one hundred just to steady his racing heartbeat.
