Misguided Metamorphosis
A Poem
out of my shell, out of the woods —
oh, you had me lost before i even realized
the lay of the land i was finding.
winter gave way with its fragile frost,
and i caved beneath the ice of it all
as i lost my footing and fell through.
but you had no idea, did you?
i couldn’t help wanting what i couldn’t have
even as you drifted farther and farther away.
out of the cold, out of my mind —
oh, you didn’t see the labyrinth i’d made
from one too many words spun in threads.
spring offered little solace,
and i used my new wings to chase down
some hint of the sanity i had lost along the way.
but what choice did i have?
wanting you was a losing game again and again,
and all i could do was try to flee to salvage myself.
out of sorry excuses, out of petty lies —
oh, i would have told you the truth long ago,
but all it would have done is satisfy my own ego.
