The puppet danced to every move she made.
“Remarkable,” she mumured, swaying to a soundless beat as her limbs flowed every which way.
The audience in the room rippled with whispers, every word for the girl manipulating the puppet.
“Does she know it might eat her soul?” one woman asked.
“I don’t think she cares,” another replied.
“Dreadful.”
“What would her father think?”
“He’d probably go dance up there with her, the fool.”
“Now, now, ladies. She’s a sensitive child.”
But their lips opened to reveal fangs.
“Such a pity. I bet she’s more delicious when she’s sad.”
“Dinner’s served.”
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
