Meet the Girl Who Flew Too High
100 Lyrics into Stories — No74
Amara knew the signs before anyone had told her what they meant.
A cashier at a grocery store in the suburbs took her by the wrist when he was handing her change, his fingertips right over the flutter of her pulse. “Be careful,” he murmured. She noticed how his pupils were so dilated that the irises were just a blue ring around the black. “You’re being watched.”
Then he let go, and she found herself nodding even as she clutched her bag of groceries to her chest.
It all made sense when they came for her on a midsummer’s day.
