“Do you believe in fate?” he had asked Calliandra the day before they took off for the stars.

“No,” she said, her voice somber. “I just believe in unhappy endings.”

“Oh, unhappy endings?” The space pirate offered a slightly sardonic smile. “Then what do you call this between us?”

The young woman shrugged. “A game of chances,” she said.

“Chances, hmm? Well, you’re lucky I’m good at playing the odds.”

Calliandra shook her head. “I don’t know about that. But you are amusing, I’ll give you that.”

“The lady does not mince words!”

That earned him a smile, at least.

This is my third take on the 100 Story Challenge! Lyrics define these stories, and this piece‘s title was inspired by “100 Years” from Five for Fighting.
