Loving You Was My Downfall

A Poem

there are no words
for the way i feel
when you’re cold as ice
and i’m on the short end
of this losing game of love.

hey, did you go to carolina
and make all your dreams
come true in firework bursts
of yesterday’s fascinations?

or did you sputter out
without me in your house,
in your heart, in your happiness —
or am i just looking for easy answers?

there are no words
for the way i feel
when you’re swift as fire
and burn me down again and again
while you smile like you’ve won something.

hey, did you go ‘round the world
like you always said you would,
or did you get stuck in place
just like i did without you?

or did you crumble too
when you realized no one
was waiting for your newest release
as if you were a godsend or a passing trend?
