Helene and I were not meant to be. We were just soldiers in a silent war. What kind of future could we have with that sword hanging over our heads?
But then the Midsummer festival arrived. For the first time in months, we wore clothes that weren’t just standard issue.
Helene wore a white gossamer dress that left little to the imagination.
I couldn’t look away.
When she handed me a cup of rationed wine, she offered a knowing smile. “Are we going to keep pretending?”
I should have told the truth.
One of us would be dead by morning.
