“Do you want to keep fighting?” Allison asked, her eyes wet as she implored him with more than words. “Or do you want to try to make things work?”

“Haven’t I tried?” Luke couldn’t stop the helpless note to his voice. How many times had they had this conversation? How many more times could they circle the same wounds and hope they could keep the infection at bay? “Hell, Allie, you know this isn’t good. You went through this with your parents, and — ”

“And what?” The sadness drained from Allison’s eyes as a new spark of anger lit within their depths. Her tone was mocking and accusing all at once. “You want to throw that in my face about my parents? You know how I feel about that. You know.”

Any other time, Luke might have taken the step forward to try and bridge the distance. Maybe he might have wrapped her up in his arms — and, though she would have resisted, eventually she would have melted into his embrace. But tonight — well, he had a feeling she wouldn’t be having such niceties. No, she was in a mood for tangling. He had known her long enough — two years of dating and five of marriage — to see all the signs as they were brewing.

God, he loved her.

But there were also times he hated her too.
