Love Wasn’t Made for Us
A Poem
we thought we had every answer
when we sprinted to the altar,
but every ever after eluded us —
a fairy tale with the wrong ending
we exchanged new year kisses
while our friends popped champagne,
the bubbles disappearing with every sip
that we downed like hungry fish
we told ourselves we knew better —
at least more than our parents did
when they made us doubt love
and anything feeling like hope
we would wonder later —
“should we have ever even met?” —
but no one could answer
besides the building regrets
we took our cash and coins
and blew it all in Vegas one night,
anything to mask the pain we felt
and the holes tearing us both apart
we said we were in love,
but did we ever really know
if it was real or just imagination
peppering our lives with fragments?
