You don’t know it, but time travelers walk among you.

Oh, sure, think of wormholes or metaphysics or even arcane magic. But I would say not to think of the why of it. Just assume — and acknowledge correctly — that you know nothing in the wide scheme of the universe. Time travel is secretive business. Even I don’t understand it as someone who’s been walking this world in loops and spurts for centuries.

But this man — let’s call him Mark — snagged my interest because he broke one of the rules imparted by the Guardians.

He had foreseen his future wife would fall in love with someone else, and he stepped in to try and make it so that she wouldn’t have a chance to split reality into an alternate timeline.

Diabolical, right?

I know. The man is a psychopath. I watched him for a long time — years — as I saw him wheedle his way into her life. He took a job at the school where she had been a student. He flattered his way into her circle of colleagues and friends. His fingertips started to trace the lines of her life in whirls like a spider spinning a web around a fly, slowly beginning to choke its life away.

As a Guardian on the outside looking in, I didn’t know all the details. I knew he didn’t…
