I didn’t think I believed in miracles until I met the love of my life.

The trick was that I didn’t realize what she could be to me until months into our knowledge of each other.

It started out as a fancy: I was curious about her from the way my friends spoke about her. I didn’t intend to get attached to the idea of her — or the way her conversation flowed like wine.

I definitely didn’t expect to fall in love with her.

It was another late night at a bar — having hit up a pub crawl with all my mates — when I saw Adrienne sitting at the counter as if she belonged there. She was a marvel, a beauty, a goddamn flame in the dark. I didn’t even care that it looked as if she had been crying; liquor could do that to anyone. I wanted to make her smile if I could.

One of my mates tried to lure me into a game of pool, but I begged off and made a beeline for Adrienne. I held my bottle of ale in my hand loosely and casually wandered to her side.

“You look like you could use some company,” I said, clinking my bottle against her glass before she looked over at me with those deep eyes of hers. “Bad night?”

A small smile came to her lips even as her gaze still held that glass-like veneer of tears…
