Some people had nightmares about attending their own funerals. Few ever actually got the chance to live the experience.

Lily Sawyer stood as a ghost by her open casket. She couldn’t bring herself to look at the body she had once inhabited, but her eyes skated across the mourners who came one by one to the coffin.

Most people wore solemn expressions, likely thinking she had been too young to die. One woman — her mother’s old coworker — broke down in sobs.

But then Lily saw the one who mattered most.

Her murderer stepped forward in the line of silent grievers.

This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
