Lena and Eric weren’t supposed to be at Gordon’s Tavern and Grill on Valentine’s Day. For her part, Lena would have been on a plane for a romantic getaway in the Caribbean, taking her first vacation in six years. Meanwhile, Eric should have been celebrating his fourth wedding anniversary to his high school sweetheart with a drive up to Lake Geneva.

But, as fate would have it, these two poor souls were ready to drown their sorrows the best way they knew how.

“I can’t believe she left me,” Eric said, already on his third shot, his head hung over the bar top. “We were supposed to be together forever. Did she just forget that — till death do us part?”

“At least you didn’t catch her in bed with your secretary,” Lena said, sipping at her martini because she still wanted to be classy even while she was in pursuit of getting hammered.

Eric squinted at her. “I thought Tom was having an affair with the cleaning lady,” he said.

“That was the first time,” Lena replied, her tone even, “which is when I should have kicked him to the curb.”

“Damn,” Eric said. “You have rotten luck with men, Lee.”
