Let It All Burn

A Poem

oh, honey, we ran in circles
‘round and ‘round each other
till we were dizzy with hurt
that ran both ways

you lit the match,
and I caught the flame
because it was a piece of you
that I wanted to save from the ashes

but we’re grown now
and we realize fire catches
till there are flames to fight
and so many lives to heal

maybe you were the smoke
like a warning sign,
telling me to stay away,
but I never fled the scene

and again and again
and again and again
I fall for the same tricks
that led us here in the first place

let it all burn,
let it all burn —
oh, I wish I could,
but I’m still here with you

give me your wounded hand
and I’ll catch the stars for you
while pressing kisses to your scars
till you smile for me just like before
