Do you love him? Then you need to let him know.

My heart beat double-time as I watched through the lens of the camera as I took pictures of David Sultry — his eyes open and wide, perfectly accentuated by lavish eye make-up to make his gaze pop even wider than usual — for the magazine Cameo. I had gotten the gig through an agency just for the hell of it as extra cash. But all the while I watched him through the lens as if I were hungering after something soft and sweet.

But he wasn’t a soft and sweet man. I had slowly begun to learn that inch by inch. He wasn’t mercurial by any means, but he was a schemer behind the scenes. “Don’t listen to him when he talks,” Atashi had said, grinning for the limelight in an interview. “He’s got a swagger, true, but you’ll just be burned if you follow him any which way.”

But there was something David didn’t know.

I knew what he had been before the spotlight. He didn’t recognize me — of course he didn’t — but it had already been fifteen years since we last saw each other. Guys like him didn’t have a memory…
