The inferno was spreading through the fields when Calyssa fell to her knees, her armor pierced by an iron arrow. She coughed out a splatter of blood before hanging her head and whispering a soft prayer.
The heat of the blaze made sweat bead on her forehead. Even if her allies were coming, they would arrive too late to put out the demonfire. She would burn to death, succumb to the smoke, or bleed out from her wound.
She looked up, wishing she could see the heavens above. No angels would sweep down to save her.
This was the end.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
