A Poem

what mad things
we’ll do for love

what heights
we’ll reach
for that one last kiss

and we walk down city streets
as strangers to each other now —
once friends,
the kind who tell each other everything

but one conversation
obliterated what came before —
a crash course in the meaning
of a happily ever after smashed to bits

and you looked my way once,
your lips curved in a familiar smile,
as my heartbeat thudded in my ears
while you hummed your favorite song

and you crossed my path
a dozen times each day
till i wound my arm around your waist,
the happiness winding between us like threads

but we took scissors
to all those careful webs
until all we had was a mess of string
and all we had left was a knot of memories
