Nola stood in the woods, her sword beside her in the snow. She bowed her head, praying to the gods even though she knew Death was out there, waiting to use his scythe against all his enemies.

“Please watch over me,” she whispered to her patron god. Everyone in Aleris had a token god christened since birth, and hers was the Trickster in all his shades of gray.

Then she looked up at the sky, tears beginning to build in her eyes as her head pounded in response. Her god, calling back to her.

“Yes, little one?” the Trickster asked.

This is my third take on the 100 Story Challenge! Lyrics define these stories, and this piece‘s title was inspired by “I’ve Got This Friend” from The Civil Wars.
