It’s Time to Say Goodbye to 2021

Seriously, let’s move on from this toxic relationship of a year.

Dear 2021,

I didn’t think you could be worse than 2020 when you first started. Sure, we had calamity carrying over from your brother year, but I thought, “Hey, it can’t get much worse than a worldwide crisis like a pandemic, right?”

We had a glow in our eyes as you approached, glammed out in all your splendor and dazzle of the hope for tomorrow. Vaccines were on the way, an idiot president had been voted out of office in the United States, and we thought we’d be putting the bad behind us, only to be glimpsed in the rear-view mirror.

But things didn’t work out that way.

If anything, some things got worse.

I don’t need to rehash things to anyone reading this. They know. They’ve seen the news (if they even believe what they hear from the media anymore). A coup attempt shook the United States, crises struck by way of climate change-induced disasters, and more variants of the same virus showed that we were far from done with the pandemic.

What would I say to you, 2021, if you were a person standing before me? I might wonder why you didn’t have a better relationship with Mother Nature — and maybe ask why you seemed to have collaborated…
