In the nightmare room at the end of the world, Emmaline faced down the girl who had been the cause of so many nightmares the last few years of her life. The girl was broken, if a little mad for it all, and Emma felt something like pity as she surveyed the girl.

“Well? Are you going to give up?”

“I don’t know why I would,” Emma said, her voice soft, and the girl stared her down as if she were an enemy on the battlefield.

“You’ve been a thorn in my side for too long,” the girl said.

“What are you?” Emma asked, certain she was facing down something that was more demon than person at that point.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?”

Emma sighed. “I know you think you’re a witch, but your spells aren’t working.”

The girl glowered, and Emma let loose another sigh.

“I wish you would understand that you need to let them go,” Emma said. “All those lost souls you’ve captured.”

“Never.”

“Then why are you sitting here all alone? Just what are you trying to accomplish?”

“I want them all back,” the girl said. “They’re mine. I captured them. They’re mine!”
