In the Moment

A Poem

i could have written down
your lines
as tattoos across my skin —
but they wouldn’t have mattered
in the grand scheme of the universe

empty promises never give way to action

i know this well,
have danced these paths before
a thousand times in my dreams —

always waiting on a love
that would love me back
just the way i wanted,
just the way i needed

i crossed paths with you
when i was at my lowest,
when unhappiness curled
through my senses like wildfire,

a downpour made just for me

and you can make your promises
all you want, that this time
will be a better road for us —

but i knew better, i knew better, i knew better

from the poison you spewed
to the vitriol you exuded
to the fumes you made real —

oh, i remember it all
