In the Garden of Good and Evil

A Very Short Story

In the garden of good and evil is a place we don’t often talk about.

It’s not a place where Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit. It’s not a place where the snake tempted Eve. It’s not a place where God cast out the demons and humans all at once, mottling them together forevermore in a rush of hedonistic motion for what they were and what fire they created together.

We don’t talk about the place where angels convened and strategized even as the world fell apart around them.

“God has abandoned this world,” one angel told another. “He wants no more part of it.”

“Then what should we do?” asked another angel, his temple creased from worry despite the fact that they were not prone to stress. Angels hid their anxieties behind walls and glamours; it was demons who wore their hearts on their sleeves.

“What else?” the first angel said with a sigh. “We persist.”

As the world would become embroiled in wars and conflicts — so many to number the stars despite the youth of the human race — angels would watch from afar, doubtful with their expressions.

Sometimes demons would join them, just for a bit of wine and a chat about the state of the world.
