In Shadows

Amrita never told her parents about the man cloaked in shadows. He was a novelty — her little secret that revealed himself every midnight hour. Most of all, she loved the songs they created, every single one coaxed from her throat as if she were a living instrument.
But things changed as Amrita grew older. The songs ceased.
The man in shadows began to watch her with a coldness in his eyes.
“Why do you hate me now?” she asked.
“You’ve changed,” he said. “Let me guess. You’ve fallen in love?”
He made it sound like a curse.
But she nodded.
This is a part of my endeavor to go back to writing tighter fiction with more stringent word counts. It’s just one attempt at the 100 Story Challenge because I thought it would be a good exercise to do to keep my imagination sharp. We’ll see how it goes.
