Amrita never told her parents about the man cloaked in shadows. He was a novelty — her little secret that revealed himself every midnight hour. Most of all, she loved the songs they created, every single one coaxed from her throat as if she were a living instrument.

But things changed as Amrita grew older. The songs ceased.

The man in shadows began to watch her with a coldness in his eyes.

“Why do you hate me now?” she asked.

“You’ve changed,” he said. “Let me guess. You’ve fallen in love?”

He made it sound like a curse.

But she nodded.
