I’m Starting Out the New Year With a New Job
Celebrations are in order, yes?
On December 9th, I received a phone call notifying me of a job offer in a technical specialist position for the college I already work for part-time. I was surprised, to say the least, since the college was notorious for slow proceedings — especially when I had interviewed for the job less than a week prior.
Even the interview itself had felt lackluster — on my part — to me, particularly because it was a virtual interview and I believe I come across much better in person. Three women took turns in asking me a series of questions, and the whole thing lasted less than twenty minutes out of an allotted hour timeframe.
Despite my doubts and misgivings, I found myself giddy at the prospect of a new job. The hours were great, the pay was much more than minimum wage, and I’d still be working at the same campus I knew from my early college days and my work there as a student employee. And, bonus, I might actually get to put my knowledge from my degree to good use!
Yet…imposter syndrome is still a very real monster in the mirror as I wonder if I have what it takes for this job. It’s my first non-retail position. My brain sorts through all the variables and sees all the ways I could screw up — everything from social flubs to errors in job…
