“You think I’m going to kill you, don’t you?” he asked, cocking his head as he surveyed her. She couldn’t help eyeing the pocket knife he held between his long fingertips — pianist’s fingers, if she was honest — as his dark eyes held the hint of something like regret.
She swallowed. “I don’t know,” she admitted. “They told me you might.”
He laughed, the sound hollow. “And do you believe everything you hear, little bird?”
“Bird?” And her feathers did feel ruffled — if she had any. “That’s — ”
“I meant it as a compliment,” he said softly.
And she believed him.
This is my third take on the 100 Story Challenge! Lyrics define these stories, and this piece‘s title was inspired by “Oh Caroline” from The 1975.
