I Was Your Summer Secret

A Poem

kiss and tell,
do or don’t,
I don’t care
what you do

we were the stuff of summer flings
and wine-drunk moments aplenty,
all those worldwide tumbles
where we talked of all the places
we’d rather be

love and let live,
we fly high again,
only to fall low
like we did before

we were magnificent once upon a time,
like a movie flashing at double-speed,
frames kicking ahead in one long reel
and telling our story in all the ways
we couldn’t do ourselves

dream on, dream on —
what they always said —
but we cashed out
on one big jackpot

we were flirtation and fire and flair,
nothing could make us quit
the high of what it meant
to be in love so hopelessly —
though we had no clue
