I Want to Believe in a World I’ll Never See

The generations ahead will be wiser, won’t they?

Contrary to what you might believe about me as a person from the stories I write, I’m not really as nihilistic — or as certain of the end of the world — as I may appear. Though I tend towards a negative slant of perspective when it comes to humanity, I do believe there are more good people out there than the bad ones. It’s just that the bad ones do tend to, er, muck it up for the rest of us.

I read the articles about climate change. I see the news stories about human decency failing when it comes to matters of power, control, and — let’s face it — capitalism. And I do read the articles here on this platform that try to warn us of our world’s muddied behaviors before it really is too late for change to make any difference.

I come across all these things — but I do still believe in the bulk of humanity.

I know most of us are tied to the whims and sways that come with relying on economy — and all its cogs and arms — to survive. I know some of us have to live in areas of the world where “freedom” is a term with next to no meaning. I know that it will take decades for systems to be dismantled — if they ever see that day — and for better options to take their places.
