princesses and dragons,
swords and might,
and all the room for you
to play the part of a prince —

what went wrong?

i could have sworn
by the light of a thousand stars
to be true to you and only you —
but you couldn’t have done the same.

ballgowns and midnight dances,
true love’s kiss and happy ends,
and every ploy in the book
never could have made you mine.

what fork in the road did i miss
on the way to meeting you?

i could have touched
a wicked spindle and slept
for a hundred years, all alone —
but you never would have come.

knights in shining armor and white horses,
goblin fruit and enchanted nights,
and too many secrets in one room —
oh, you had the crown but not the spirit.

i watched you flirt your way
past skirts aplenty and blushes alight,
and to you i was just a number
to be checked off a…
