I Never Knew a Love Like This
A Poem
it all started with a question,
innocent in its curiosity
despite the undeniable burn
behind the words.
“have you ever fallen in love?”
and i had no answer,
not really,
because i always chased
but never snagged the one.
he was a bit like you, now that i think about it —
green eyes like freshly cut grass,
a smile that wouldn’t ever quit,
and soulful eyes in an unblemished face.
but his type of girl was always model-thin,
perfect in every single picture,
and prone to games of flirtation —
how could i compete with that?
it was still a losing game
because i was stuck in my ways
and you can change yourself only so much
for the sake of pleasing someone else.
but still you persisted,
repeating the question,
and i sighed as if it were a chore
because secrets and i were close friends.
