oh, passion of mine, I thought we were adrift
in a tide on love’s rampant shores —
but then you left on your own adventures
and I had to wonder what I missed.

did I miss your laugh, like a bell chime,
setting my heart into a steady race?

did I miss your languid smile so at ease
whenever we were caught in an embrace?

oh, there were the details to number the stars —
but I couldn’t help my curiosity to know
just which pieces of you helped to make
the picture of a life I still craved in doses.

did I miss the comfort of your warmth
on nights when storms threatened?

did I miss the steadiness of your gaze
when we saw each other across a room?

oh, maybe you were just another love
like pieces scattered to make a puzzle —
but perhaps you were the stuff of dreams
rather than what I needed in the moment.

did I miss you because it was easier
to say the promise that you were mine?
