I Gave You My Everything

Poetry

you thought I was simple and naïve,

far from too good to be true,

but I broke past your barriers

and called you my own in time.

was it enough?

did I dare speak your name?

did I give you my love each day?

my hands are curled outward,

giving you all I have in pieces,

but you’re looking away from me

to far-off places you long to explore.

am I enough?

did you ever speak my name?

did you love me more and more each day?

you settle your gaze on me at last,

and there’s a distance there,

as if you’re standing on a cliff’s edge

and waiting to jump to get away.

were we enough?

did we ever voice our names aloud?

did we love each other the way we should have?

you want to leave, I know, I know,

but I’ll probably always wait for the day

when I’ll gain your regard again

and be the everything I wanted to be for you.
