I don't want to lead you astray - this piece was a work of fiction - but I lost my mother when she was only 52 after long battles with various illnesses due to her type-1 diabetes. I know she felt by the end that she had been just a guinea pig for medical advancement/knowledge, and seeing her suffer was one of the most painful things I've ever experienced in my life.
