it’s another summer day,
and the sun looks like fire
on that faraway horizon —
and I think of you, it’s true,
in that unreachable land of yours
where I could never hope to tread.

my heart may as well be petals
scattered on the ground in piles,
but it doesn’t matter, does it,
because you’ll never know.
these secrets were just mine
to keep and hide and hold.

my friends laughed at me
when I said you were charming
because they knew the end
long, long before I fathomed it —
and they could have predicted
just the way my heart would break.

you’ve got a girl now, pretty as can be,
and she’s the opposite of me —
vivacious instead of meek,
outgoing instead of boring,
talkative instead of quiet,
ambitious instead of insecure.
