Hopelessly Yours

A Poem

there was an orbit we couldn’t deny
as passion plays erupted
between the selves we knew
and the ones we pretended to be.

you could have chased me
across this labyrinth of love,
but the time wasn’t right
as we circled each other instead.

oh, the red of me
stood against your blue
and we could have made
such a pretty picture, don’t you think?

we met again and again,
through friends and enemies alike,
but there was no right where or how
for what failed to spark and ignite.

but then the night came
where you were alone
and so was I —
and the story shifted.

then the flashbacks
took over
because
I had lost this war before.

you were the balm
to all my bruises,
but I couldn’t lean on you
when I couldn’t trust myself.

were you my crutch?
or was I yours?
I didn’t know, I didn’t know
that falling could be so hard.

but here I stand today,
a bouquet in my hands,
and there you are,
smiling like a second sun.

when did I become
so hopelessly yours?
when did the tale
begin to spin in webs?

yesterday is gone,
but here we are —
ready to embrace
a journey together.
