Hope Hurts Just Like Heartbreak

A Poem

How I wanted to believe in you,
So much that I shattered myself
To pieces, fragments of memory,
Just to trim down to the size
Of what I thought you needed
And what I thought you wanted.

I could have tried to tell myself
None of it mattered, not really,
As inch upon inch of me disappeared
Till I was just a sapling
In your overgrown garden
That had no room for me.

Everyone saw the change,
The desperation of it all,
But I convinced them
That it was all my doing,
Every choice and mistake,
While you sat by and watched.

Even after the end came
With all its bruises and scars,
I still waited for your name
To light up on my phone
Because I was addicted to you
And every little hurt you caused.

The hope became its own drug
Because I missed your closeness,
Your realness and solidness…
