Holly and Evergreen
Strange things did happen here.
Holly wasn’t supposed to have a sister. When her mother Drea gave birth, all the doctors said another pregnancy would be impossible. Only a miracle could bring a second child into Drea’s life.
Then, two weeks before Christmas, Drea found a swaddled baby on the doorstep of her apartment unit. While Holly cried in the background — anothe tantrum, of course — Drea’s hands hovered over the sleeping baby who looked so peaceful as if she had never had a bad day in her short life.
The way things went, no one claimed the newborn.
Months and trials with legal red tape passed, and eventually Drea found herself the mother of another baby girl.
It was a joke when Drea and her family called the girl Evergreen because of the holiday season when she had been found. The name wasn’t supposed to stick — but at least it was better than Jane Doe for a lifetime.
But, oh, Holly? Let’s just say she was the one who was green — with envy, as fate would have it.
Every time Evergreen fussed, Holly would eye her mother with disdain as Drea attended to the baby’s every need. Another girl might have welcomed the comfort of a sibling. But Holly was not that type of girl.
