Hold Me Close and Never Let Go

A Poem

it was supposed to be
the happiest of days
and the brightest
of endings too.

fairy tales sell us
the idea of joy
wrapped up
with warnings,
all those tricks
and wolves
and poison apples
and rusted keys
that don’t fit
in any lock.

it was supposed to be
the first embrace
and the last
to the tune
of “never let me go” —
even though we would
be parted at some point,
perhaps not here
but maybe there
in the great unknown.

oh, I loved you fierce
and you loved me
the only ways
you knew how.

“hold me close,”
I whispered
as our song
filled the room.
