Rae came over to watch a movie with Benny and me, but he clocked out about twenty minutes into the film.

“Lame,” he said. “You know I can’t take this Regency crap. Wasn’t it bad enough you made me sit through Bridgerton?”

“Hey, you loved it,” I said, flicking a piece of popcorn his way. “You were besotted with the male lead. What was his name? Jean something-something?”

“He was a masterpiece.” Benny let out a soft sight of longing. “But, no, I must abstain. If the guys aren’t getting naked, there’s nothing there for me. I’m out.”

“Fine, fine, it’s your loss,” I replied. “We’ll just become more cultured without you.”

“I appreciate your sacrifice in service to the crown,” Benny said, mock-serious, and this time Rae was the one to throw a piece of popcorn in his direction. It pitifully bounced off his arm. “See you later, girls.”

When Benny went out the door a few minutes later, Rae leaned in to whisper, “He kept looking at his phone. I’m guessing he was going out to meet someone.”

“What? Benny?” I laughed. “He’s too shy for that. He can’t even flirt with our regular barista at Starbucks.”
