Her History Is More Than What You See On Her Face

A Poem

age — such an ugly word
to a society that loves
to beat women down
for every wrinkle
and each sag of skin

you’d think they’d know better
than to wage war with women
who birthed the whole human race

beauty — such deception
in a world that uses it
for currency
in every picture
and each screen

you’d think it would be better
just to see people as they are,
but no — we crave the lies

honesty — such a bygone
in a ruined palace
of expectation
trapped in gold
and scarred by silver

you’d think we would realize
the truth may hurt —
but at least it’s the devil we know

woman — such a term
laced with disregard
and no respect,
far from the man
who lords over all
