A Poem

heaven help me

I think I’ve fallen for one more lie

to drop in the bucket you’ve made

all for me to rifle through at day’s end.

heaven help me

I thought your voice would save me

more than anything else ever could

or even how I might save myself.

heaven help me

I did think your eyes were beautiful —

weren’t they the mirrors to the soul? —

but they were the first grand deceptions.

heaven help me

I think I’ve lost my way with you

and I can’t even see the ground

or know how to stifle this flame.

heaven help me

I thought your words were gold,

treasures for me to have and to hold —

but they were the cast-offs of other girls.

heaven help me

I did think your kiss was meaningful —

didn’t bodies have their own language? —

but I’ve fallen for that lie once too many.

heaven help me

I know your love is not for me —

nor was it ever, I suppose —

but I’ll be better without the pain.
