Heartbreaker

A Poem

You eye the crowd,
And I know you’re searching
Like a lion ready to stalk its prey.

What did I hope for?
You didn’t care, did you?
Why do I keep asking when the answer’s the same?

Every single moment led to this —
Our joint unraveling,
Twined hearts in chaos.

What could we do?
How could we have avoided this train wreck?
Why do you still act as if everything’s okay?

All the hearts you broke
And all the pain you inflicted —
Why did I ever get involved in your slaying?

What should I have done?
Nobody arrests a serial heartbreaker.
They just clap him on the back and let him go.

There are ways to end the madness,
But I don’t think you’re ready
Since you’re still on the lookout for your next mark.

Is she too thin? Too talkative? Too keen?
Maybe you don’t like the way she bites her lip.
Each girl’s flaw is one more thing for you to rage about.
