Green Eyes

A Sonnet

I’ll be honest with you once and for all.

You were the love I left behind last June.

But you left me a note in your fine scrawl

And I was taken aback far too soon.

*

Those too-bright eyes of yours pleaded with me,

Never to leave you and never to part,

And I felt the crash of the deep blue sea

As you tapped at the door to my closed heart.

*

But for once to look you straight in the face

I felt bruised and numb from too much love lost

And it was easy to give myself space

Rather than meet your far gaze full of frost.

*

What I remember most is the true green

Of the boy I left behind at fifteen.
