A Poem

they were
simple words
that left
my heart racing

a glance or two —
perhaps enough
to give pause
just once

oh, the words thrilled
because I’d never heard them
fall from someone’s lips —
never in my direction

your teasing smile,
an off-hand remark,
never more or less —
just a hint of something real

oh, I repeated every word
like a reel in my mind
but you were untouchable
just like everyone before or after

wish upon a star,
fireworks in my stomach
as the day dragged on
and I felt hopelessly lost

but you were a daydream,
nothing more,
because it was easier that way
and so much safer for me too

the truth, oh —
you’d say the words to anyone
because that was just who you were,
always putting kindness first
