Goodbye Came Too Soon
A Poem
She isn’t what you thought —
But maybe that’s a good thing,
Don’t you think?
She was a surprise in high heels,
Ever the party face for a night out,
And yet you never tried to join her.
Do you think she waited for you?
Do you think she cried at night?
Do you think she left far too early?
But you have no answers
Because you’re not a talker —
Never interested beyond yourself.
You try to convince everyone
That it was you, never you,
And she was the big problem.
Your mother said it was best —
“That girl was never good for you” —
But you know you’re in the wrong.
Your father said it was a shame —
“What a pretty girl she was” —
But you won’t say you agree.
And then one night you see
Her dancing in the arms
Of someone who isn’t you.
